Fireworks lit up as F2 Logistics Ara Galang emerged as top overall pick in the 3rd Philippine Superliga (PSL) Annual Rookie Draft yesterday at the Music Hall Oval Venue of Mall of Asia.

Galang, star open hitter of UAAP champion De La Salle University, landed on the Cargo Movers after three-time champion RC Cola-Army decided to trade its pick for future consideration.

It was such a tense moment as speculations flew that Galang will be withdrawing her name at the last minute to pursue her academics where she still had 19 units left before earning an Entrepreneurship degree.

Galang will be joining an already explosive unit featuring the nucleus of the Lady Spikers including Mika Reyes, Cyd Demecillo, Kim Fajardo, Kim Dy, Dawn Macandili and Majoy Baron.

Former La Salle stars Aby Maraño, Paneng Mercado and Aby Marano are also part of the Cargo Movers, who are tipped to be the team to beat in this prestigious club tournament.

“I’m home,” said Galang, who will be re-united with former coach Ramil de Jesus. “This is the perfect time to join the draft. I took the opportunity because this is once-in-a lifetime.”

“It’s really overwhelming to be taken as top pick.”

CJ Rosario, younger sister of Philippine Basketball Association (PBA) player Troy and the projected top overall pick, landed on Petron as second pick after Generika also yielded its choice.

She will be re-united with the Tri-Activ Spikers, who emerged in the semis of the pre-season Invitational Conference recently.

“I was praying for it,” she said. “Mahirap mag-adjust. So I’m so happy that it happened.”

Amy’s Kitchen-Perpetual tapped University of Mindanao playmaker Renelyn Raterta while Generika settled for 6-foot-1 Gen Casugod of Far Eastern University.

Cignal, Foton, Standard Insurance and RC Cola-Army declined to make a choice in the first round.

In the second round, Generika tapped Angelica Legacion of Arellano University while Marlyn Llagoso of Southwestern University was taken by Cignal and Shirley Salamagos of Arellano ended with reigning Grand Prix champion Foton to wrap up the draft proper.

The PSL All Filipino Conference kicks off on June 18.
